Our volunteers are a really great group of people. They're very committed and dedicated to the children. Our volunteers have ranged from congressional spouses to judges of the U.S. Superior Court. We've had several judges, as well as lots of lawyers and government workers. We also have people from the neighborhood. Some of the children have also served as tutors in junior high and high school for the youngest children.
TUTORING VOLUNTEER:
We would like to invite volunteers who want to make a real difference. Volunteers are paired with one child or youth (ages 5 to 15) for weekly tutoring and occasional weekend outings. Volunteers may schedule tutoring one of four nights a week, Monday through Thursday, between 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Within that time, volunteers visit with the child and then tutor for one hour. The FOTS program has a library of books, educational board games and a computer technology center.
The children need a special friend who believes in them and their ability to grow and succeed. Volunteer tutors are asked to commit to work with a student for one year. Other than that you need only patience and a desire to help a child. We will train you and provide what assistance you need.
TECHNOLOGY VOLUNTEER:
Volunteer opportunities are also available in our Computer Technology Center, where volunteers can lead small groups of students in weekly technology activities and projects, such as Lego robotics and web design, or help to refurbish donated computers. Technology classes meet once a week in the FOTS computer center.
